We have covered human evolution, nutrition, physical activity, sleep, and stress.
Are we forgetting anything on the puzzle of Burn Fat forever?
Time to discuss social life, nature and joy.
For thousands of years (maybe a couple of millions), human beings have lived in tribes as hunter-and-gatherers communities.
It makes sense because social living offered better protection from predators, higher odds of hunting success, and enhanced “group” care for the offspring.
Now stop and think about the modern world.
Is it similar?
That is where friendship comes handy.
Social relationships, particularly friends, reduce stress and its chronic impact on our physical and mental health.
It makes us happy and connected.
Oxytocin-the hormone of love:
When we hug or kiss a loved one, oxytocin levels drive up.
In fact, “couples who are administered oxytocin (versus a placebo) have fewer intense fights, and the men rate their partners as more attractive and spend less time looking at other women.”
Do you want to hear a curious fact?
Researchers have observed that oxytocin and oxytocin receptor-deficient mice become obese later in life.
That is why social connection is so important my Amigo!
BE ON NATURE
Human beings are meant to be in nature.
When was the last time you have taken a long walk in the woods, and felt soothed by the sound of the wind in the trees and the crisp smell of leaves? Or when was the last time you saw the sunset at the beach?
All of us who have experienced the nature knows that we feel calm, fortified, and relaxed.
The beautiful things are that medicine is finally taking notice of the health benefits and more and more studies have been showing the correlation between spending time in nature and good health.
Decreased blood pressure, increased energy, reduction of stress, enhanced focus, and deep joy are just a few of the improved markers when we tend to spend more time in nature.
Furthermore, there is something that you only get when you are outdoors called SUNLIGHT!
Did you know that our ancestors spent about half of their day in the sunlight?
Nowadays, not only we spend less time outdoors, but we are also discouraged of getting exposed to the sun due to fear of skin cancer.
Without going into many details, I just want to say that you are only at risk when you BURN yourself or if you are under a super LOW FAT diet.
As you probably know, the sun is the best way to get your Vitamin D which acts almost like a hormone in the body (bone health, anti-cancer, supports the immune system, protects against dementia and brain aging, good for losing excess fat, essential for decreasing symptoms of asthma and strengthens teeth).
Vitamin D is just one of the benefits.
When you get exposed to sunlight, you reduce your risk of MS (multiple sclerosis), depression goes down, you sleep better (that is one more step which I did not mention before on how to get the best night of sleep), and you just feel better.
Sunshine is a not an option. Sunshine is mandatory!
Ok. Knowing that the sun is good for you is not enough. You have to take action and get outdoors.
How do you do that?
You can create a garden, you can get a dog, you can exercise outdoors, you can get your butt out of the couch and go for a walk!
The secret is to be out!
We learned that one of the best medicines to fight stress is enjoying ourselves and having fun.
I want to give a little more attention to this topic that, at first, seems to have nothing to do with Burn Fat Forever.
Here is the question, though.
Do you agree that chronic stress can make you fat?
Yes. That is right. Cortisol dysregulation is a huge issue.
Now here is the good news. Pleasure is the best way to fight stress.
Our bodies secrete a chemical called endorphins when we experience pleasure.
Animal research has revealed, for example, that endorphin levels are up to 86 times higher after animals experience multiple orgasms! (more details about sex later on the series)
Daily activities such as playing with a pet, watching a funny movie, listening to our favorite music, visiting a favorite place or connecting with loved ones can give us just as much pleasure.
Let me tell you a story that I heard from a very famous “health expert”:
A guy popped into his office looking completely unhealthy. He had no energy and looked malnourished. The doctor asked what was going on.
“I have been eating super clean and do not know what is going on with me! I have been perfect but it is not working Doctor!”
The Doctor does his best and tells him everything he knows about getting healthy.
The client disappears and never comes back.
One day, “another” guy (healthy looking) popped into the office and asks the doctor if he recognizes him. The Doc says “No”.
Surprisingly, that was the same person who months ago was malnourished and unhappy.
The Doctor asks him what did he do?
He says that he started to go out again with friends and was having his favorite food once a week and enjoying life. He stopped worrying about everything and reduce stress.
That is just an example of what can happen if we stop enjoying life or develop orthorexia.
